Museums, Part 2 - A Behind-the-Scenes Look at Worker Safety Through Industry Practices and OSHA On-Site Consultation Outreach (AIHce EXP 2022 OnDemand)
Course Description: Recorded at AIHce EXP 2022 Potentially serious health-safety risks to both worker and visitors can occur in the management of cultural heritage sites and collections. Beyond museums, there are botanical gardens, zoos, education collections, rare book libraries, military centers. Health risks may include exposure to formaldehyde, lead dust, toxic pigments, arsenical pesticides, solvents, mold and silica dust. Physical hazards related to site & exhibit maintenance include working at heights, slips trips and falls, improper hand tool use, and ergonomics. Major corporations have the OEHS resources to successfully manage these risks. But how do smaller cultural heritage facilities without this help manage? Do some employers, such as archival film studios, even realize their holdings are collections in need of hazard control? Part 2 of this two-part education session will discuss and share: 1) how health and safety is managed in the Deere & Company Collections, which are displayed in a Museum and at several factories and facilities worldwide; 2) how the OSHA OnSite Consultation Program partnered with AIHA Museum & Cultural Heritage Industry WG to promote its services to smaller site employers; and 3) the top health & safety control needs addressed based on consultation visits in six states; and 4) the challenges a small site successfully managed. This interactive session provides risk management strategies for both small historic houses and for global companies to safely curate their own museums. Learning Outcomes At the end of this lecture, attendees will: • Recognize common hazards within the museum and cultural heritage industry. • Develop strategies that bridge from hazard identification to worker exposure assessment and risk control. • Leverage OSHA and environmental regulations impacting this workforce. • Manage resources and AIHA volunteer opportunities to assist museums and cultural heritage industries in managing their risks.
