Best Practices for Protecting Lone Lab Researchers (AIHce EXP 2022 OnDemand)
Course Description:
Recorded at AIHce EXP 2022

Working alone increases risk of severe lab accidents that could result in injury or death. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the need to work alone, raising this concern to the forefront amongst leaders and researchers. This provides an opportunity to address working alone in laboratories with formal policies, programs and tools. This session will be a follow-up and supplement to the recent Synergist article "The Lone Lab Worker: Best Practices for Protecting Researchers". This education session will present: 1) the journey one research institution has taken to address working alone; 2) information on incidents involving lone work; 3) benchmarking information from 82 universities and colleges in the U.S., Canada and UK; 4) injury/illness data evaluation results; 5) program development process; and 6) testing of an application-based tool to assist with managing lone work. Throughout the session, the speakers will provide insight into the challenges that were faced throughout the process and actions that were taken to overcome these challenges. Participants are encouraged to share their experiences through interactive discussion.
