The Role of the IH in a Pandemic, Part 3 (AIHce EXP 2022 OnDemand)
Course Description:
Recorded at AIHce EXP 2022

The "Role of the Industrial Hygienist in a Pandemic" (2nd edition) was published in August, 2021. Although the book provides an update on many topics covered in the first edition (2006), it does not explicitly suggest that specific strategies are needed by the profession to ensure that IHs are at the table when decisions are made in planning and responding to the impact of a pandemic in the workplace. During the COVID-19 response IH influence should have been brought to bear: a) in recognizing that SARS COV-2 is an inhalation hazard, b) in developing risk assessment methodology, c) in applying the hierarchy of controls, and d) in requiring high risk settings to comply with OSHA's minimum requirements for respiratory protection. The importance and proper use of ventilation and other engineering and administrative controls is also clearly in the IH wheelhouse. The state, federal, and international health authorities that set standards for workplaces paid minimal attention and often misapplied industrial hygiene principles and research in developing worker protection measures. The objective of this session is to: 1) review the concepts covered in the roles and responsibilities section, 2) review the gaps in IH influence during the COVID-19 response, and 3) formulate strategy options needed to advance worker health and safety in pandemic planning and response.
