The Role of the IH in a Pandemic, Part 2 (AIHce EXP 2022 OnDemand)
Course Description:
Recorded at AIHce EXP 2022

The "Role of the Industrial Hygienist in a Pandemic" (2nd edition) was published in August, 2021. Although the book provides an update on many topics covered in the first edition (2006), it does not explicitly suggest that new research is needed to anticipate, recognize, evaluate, or control pandemic agents for either COVID-19 or future pandemics. Communication about prevention and control measures needed by workers during this pandemic has been as much a challenge as development of the vaccine for COVID-19. Understanding the cultural barriers that have prevented consistent adoption of mitigation measures may require new hypotheses in Total Worker Health® and in messaging specific workers, such as construction workers that resist face coverings and vaccination in large numbers. The pandemic has revealed the need to conduct more sensitive contract tracing and track vaccine status using data analytics. New sensors are needed to track indoor environmental conditions and pathogenic organisms in real-time. The objective of this session is to review the concepts covered in the book's total worker health, communication, data analytics, and sensor section and formulate research needed to bridge gaps in our knowledge of these subjects.

Learning Outcomes

  • • Review the concepts covered in the book's total worker health, communication, data analytics, and sensor section.
