Using Human Performance Evaluations to Accurately Identify Exposure Risk (AIHce EXP 2022 OnDemand)
Course Description:
Recorded at AIHce EXP 2022

Post-offer physicals often do not provide the degree of specificity IHs and safety professionals need to understand a job applicant's or employee's work-related exposure risk. During this session, an occupational medicine physician will describe how human performance evaluations (HPEs) help determine: a) fitness for work, b) the ability to perform essential functions, and c) risk-based hiring and job-placement decisions. An HPE can be used to identify physical, cognitive and chronic health conditions that may put an applicant or employee at risk of injury or illness. When correctly done, HPEs based on job observations, bio-ergonomic surveillance using wearable technology and other assessment tools provide accurate, legally defensible findings.

Learning Outcomes
At the end of this lecture, attendees will:
  • • Identify differences between pre-placement/post-offer physicals and human performance evaluations.
  • • Apply physicals and evaluations to risk-based hiring and Total Worker Health® practices.
  • • Recognize components of a human performance evaluation that measure physical and cognitive conditions that may put an employee at risk.
  • • Explain observation techniques and tools that produce legally defensible clinical findings.
  • • Demonstrate ways in which chronic health conditions influence an applicant's or employee's exposure risk profile.
