Hurricane Response During the COVID-19 Pandemic (AIHce EXP 2022 OnDemand)

Readily monitoring 30 named storms during the 2020 hurricane season, USCG members deployed as Incident Command System (ICS) Safety Officer (SOFRs), providing crucial safety, environmental health, and infection control support to Unit Commanders and field responders. Staff developed and implemented COVID-19 infection control guidance and strategies including a universal site safety and health plan, targeted safety messages, and relevant controls to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. Staff produced critical promotional materials, summarized the most pertinent guidance to assist local units prepare, response, mitigate, and adapt operations during the COVID-19 pandemic. Materials included 17 critical safety bulletins and two site safety and health plan templates to efficiently address unit concerns related to COVID-19 and the ensure safe continuity of operations during the pandemic. In addition, HSWL SC released an Infection control technical directive, directing unit safety officers to compose a locally-managed COVID-19 Infection control plan. The goal was to implement well-defined mitigation strategies and controls to prevent the spread of SAR-CoV-2 and be ready to respond to a presumed or confirmed case.
