Chaos and Order in Air Contamination (AIHce EXP 2022 OnDemand)

Chaos theory has become a promising approach applicable in the areas of modern thermodynamics, chemistry, medicine, and social sciences. Chaotic behavior of dynamic systems often relates to situations when the observed parameter is very sensitive to initial conditions that makes the system's outcome unpredictable in a long run. This session will introduce the fascinating area of chaotic trends in air contamination. The hypothetical simulation will be demonstrated when car owners from the fictitious town of Fibersville try to control exposures to the compound fibrette that can be emitted from the brake lining of their cars. Each morning, the citizens make a decision whether to drive their car today, or to use other ways of transportation, based on the reported fibrette concentrations. It will be shown that the average airborne concentration appears to be chaotic, fluctuating between levels above and below the level of concern. It will be argued that the attempts of citizens to control the emissions will be less successful without established standards, or regulations, and some measures of enforcement. The discussions will be proposed for applicability of the model for real-life situations, like asbestos in brakes analysis, or social distancing decisions for pandemics.

At the end of this lecture, attendees will:

  • • Recognize the factors causing the chaotic trends in air pollution.
  • • Evaluate the level of public health risks due to asbestos in brakes; historically and current conditions.
  • • Discuss the role of individual decision making and centralized regulations in improving air quality.
