Transfer of Copper onto Skin Following Repeated Contacts

Interest in dermal exposure as a main pathway of exposure has increased as other exposure pathways (i.e., ingestion, inhalation), are better understood, reduced, or eliminated. Substance transfer to the skin surface has been hypothesized to occur through numerous different pathways and compartments. Few studies have investigated the potential for measurable transfer. In this study, substance transfer (elemental copper) was quantitatively evaluated for repeated contacts between different compartments, specifically source to skin and skin to skin. Using three different instruments for comparison, the impact of skin hydration and barrier properties on transfer was also assessed. The findings indicate that relative to a baseline of 100% transfer for a single contact, the quantitative transfer efficiency decreased with repeated contacts to 20% after five contacts or ten contacts. Further, skin to skin transfer efficiency after one contact was approximately 70% and 60% following five contacts. The implications of skin hydration data suggest a potential relationship with loading. Due to the lack of method standardization and variance in reporting metrics, the relationship requires further investigation. This presentation will assist in understanding substance transfer onto the skin from different compartments and that skin condition plays an important role in the amount transferred.
