Advancing Injury Prevention Through AI and Wearable Technology (AIHce EXP 2022 OnDemand)
Course Description:
Recorded at AIHce EXP 2022

Technology is being implemented to assist and increase musculoskeletal safety in the workplace. Traditional ergonomic evaluations can be time consuming, and if not done correctly, leave you with information that doesn't provide the full picture. With industry 4.0 shifting into industry 5.0, these technologies are merging into a collaboration between human and machine. We are being furnished with large possibilities and opportunities to work well by gathering data from the real-world and transmit it to the virtual world for decision making. Technologies can: 1) track and measure activity, injury, and physical demand risks; and 2) provide objective data for control implementation or workplace redesign. Risk assessment can now be performed using video processing technology collecting accurate data with high validity and reliability. AI and machine learning have increased the feasibility of objectively assessing movements on larger populations during on-the-job work settings, dynamic work, variability of tasks and locations. This session will assist those responsible for ergonomic programs to leverage their knowledge and experience by using preventative based technologies and skilled data interpretation to move up the hierarchy of controls to reduce injuries and associated costs.

Learning Outcomes
At the end of this lecture, attendees will:
  • • Identify how wearables and AI-driven technology can change behaviors.
  • • Examine how video processing streamlines ergonomic evaluations by complementing observations.
  • • Interpret how video processing and wearable sensors can help processes for hiring, early intervention, and return to work programs.
  • • Analyze data metrics to investigate risk areas.
