Nanoparticle Emission From 3D Printing (AIHce EXP 2022 OnDemand)
Course Description:
Recorded at AIHce EXP 2022

Use of fused filament fabrication (FFF) 3D printers is increasing in industrial, academic, military, and residential sectors. Characterization of potential environmental releases and workers/consumer exposures requires further investigation. This session will explore: a) a methodology for evaluation of the potential level of emissions from FFF 3D printers; b) health concerns; c) how environmental measurements can be combined with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling; d) the toxic potential of ultrafine particle exposures; and e) a study to determine nanoparticle emission rates and CFD modeling. In the study to determine the nanoparticle emission rate, the FFF printer used filaments of natural colored ABS to produce a 40 mm cube in over 4 hours. Measurements of the particle concentrations were found to pass the Hanna test for agreement between model and experimental data. The risk assessment for the 3D printer emission can be performed using various models, and it will be demonstrated during the session.

Learning Outcomes
At the end of this lecture, attendees will:
  • • Discuss the EHS issues related to 3D printer emissions.
  • • Describe the settings for simulation of 3D printer emissions.
  • • Compare measurement approaches to nanoparticle evaluations.
  • • Interpret exposure results from the position of toxicological knowledge.
