Emergency Preparedness: Is the Workplace Truly Prepared for Emergencies? (AIHce EXP 2022 OnDemand)
Course Description:
Recorded at AIHce EXP 2022

Every year, thousands of employees are exposed to various types of emergencies. In any event, a plant must be prepared for any adverse situation that has a high-level of probability of happening and spontaneous incidents that occur without warning. Injuries, both minor and major along with loss of life can happen depending on the severity of the emergency. These circumstances can be minimized with proper emergency preparedness planning, organization, communication, implementation, and training. One neglected part of Emergency Preparedness is shift change. Shift change can have a profound affect on Emergency Action Plans. For example, a plant might have double the people at a time where the plant needs to be evacuated or employees sent to disaster shelters. This presentation will focus on levels and categories of emergencies, risk assessments, and observed findings from a tornado drill conducted during a shift change. This presentation will discuss roles of the Workplace Emergency Action Team, Emergency Preparedness Plan Management Team, and provide action plans. The session will incorporate how shift changes not only impacts safety professionals, but how this new knowledge can be expanded and applied to industrial hygienists.
