Pros and Cons of PCR Analysis in Legionella Sample Analysis and Data Interpretation (AIHce EXP 2022 OnDemand)
Course Description:
Recorded at AIHce EXP 2022

Standard plate culture has been referenced as the gold standard in Legionella analysis. The need for fast results in Legionellosis investigations, has driven the implementation of analytical methods that can provide results faster than the typical 10-14 day turnaround of plate culture. Legionella sample collection is being performed by a variety of individuals outside of traditional IHs trained in risk assessment and sample analysis (e.g., water treatment professionals, engineers, infection preventionists, building owners and operators). Understanding the benefits and limitations of analytical methods is critical to the interpretation of sample results, which drive the selection of remediation or control measures. This presentation will discuss: 1) the practical application benefits and limitations of Legionella analysis by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR); 2) interpretation guidance for PCR analytical results; and 3) availability of methods to assess viability in PCR analysis. Case studies with data presentation will be utilized to demonstrate talking points.

Learning Outcomes
At the end of this lecture, attendees will:
  • • Develop an understanding of PCR as an analytical method for Legionella.
  • • Recognize the practical benefits and limitations of PCR in Legionella analysis.
  • • Interpret PCR data collected in Legionella investigations.
