The Fellows SIG Debate, Part 1 - Do Our Membership Organizations Exist to Serve Their Memberships or Public Health Needs? (AIHce EXP 2022 OnDemand)
Course Description:
Recorded at AIHce EXP 2022

The Fellows SIG Debate will present: 1) Do our Membership Organizations Exist to Serve their Memberships or to Serve Public Health Needs? and 2) Has the Global Pandemic Moved the Needle on this Topic?

This is the 5th AIHA Fellows SIG Debate designed to present varied views on a controversial or debated issue that impacts our profession and our professionals. There has been discussion over a number of years, and particularly recently with the global pandemic, about the purpose of AIHA and other membership organizations, our profession, and its professionals. Do we as members of our professional organizations first serve the public health through our actions, including outreach, education, conferences, publications, webinars, etc. Do we as members of a professional organization serve the industrial hygiene community and, more specifically, the members of our professional association to advance their capacity to serve the greater public health? Should we be inward or outward looking as a profession? With the pandemic, has the general focus or outlook of our profession changed to swing more in one direction or another?

Learning Outcomes
At the end of this lecture, attendees will:
  • • Enhance education about the public health needs vs. membership needs related to our organizations.
  • • Develop critical thinking about public health needs vs. needs of our profession.
  • • Demonstrate open discussion and interest in this topic.
  • • Recognize the value of public-health focused practices.
  • • Strengthen the value of community and membership support.
