Each year OSHA's industrial hygienists perform thousands of health inspections of general industry, maritime, agriculture, and construction sites and on occasion, discover workplaces that have interesting health exposures. health hazards. Part 1 of this three-part education session will present: 1) The Hidden Dangers of the Limestone Slurry during Tank Washing Operations; and 2) Summertime Bridge Construction and a Heat Stress Death. This session will discuss: a) an OSHA fatality inspection involving a tank washing operation; b) how OSHA utilizes medical information to determine employee exposure to an oxygen deficient atmosphere; c) OSHA's general industry permit-required confined spaces standard; d) an OSHA construction inspection and results of a heat stress death; e) the importance of heat stress mitigation for outdoor work and how effective communication to employees is vital; and f) OSHA's directive regarding communicating its fatality inspection procedures to the victim's family.
