Calculating COVID-19 Risk Exposure Using Semiquantitative Tool

The Health and Safety Division (Code QH) at NASA's Ames Research Center (ARC) used the COVID Exposure Assessment Tool (CEAT), developed by the COVID-19 International Research Team (COV-IRT). Exposure assessments of over 80 individual project tasks with respect to the risk of being exposed to the SARS-CoV2 virus were conducted. As environmental conditions changed, the exposure assessments were repeated. The goal was to: 1) assess the increasing/decreasing relative risk within the workplace, 2) aid in the selection/adjustment of controls, and 3) develop project-specific return to onsite work requirements.

The CEAT takes into consideration 10 variables (i.e., vaccination rates, ventilation, mask use, number of individuals, etc.), when calculating relative risk levels. Code QH was able to use the tool to qualitatively assess the effectiveness of current controls for each of the project tasks. When current controls were inadequate, the tool allowed Code QH to determine the right combination of new controls necessary to obtain the largest reduction in relative risk.

Use of the tool ensures a consistent and unbiased method for evaluating relative risk which direct comparison of results. Continued validation of the tool can confirm its ability to assist employers in navigating controversial decisions such as mask and vaccination mandates. This due diligence tool might also decrease an employer's regulatory liability.

Workplace Stress and Associated Factors Among Vehicle Repair Workers in Hawassa City, Southern Ethiopia
In Ethiopia (a low-income country) there is a high number of industrial activities throughout the country, but little focus on workers' health and safety. Government bodies focus on the unemployment rate reduction and company owners focus on production/profit increments. At the present time, Ethiopia has good workers' H&S policies and regulations with poor implementation and enforcement. Presenting research findings from workers in low-income countries might help scholars learn the real facts of workers' health problems in other developing countries. Implementing workplace health practices in countries with emerging economies is much different from developed countries (e.g., U.S. or Europe). This global occupational health presentation brings a different perspective to help others receive practical knowledge and experience regarding OHS throughout the world. Acquiring knowledge and experience from AIHce EXP participation, will contribute to preventing workers' health and safety problems in Ethiopia.
