Hazards and Exposure Risks of British Columbia Wildfire Firefighters (AIHce EXP 2022 OnDemand)
Course Description:
Recorded at AIHce EXP 2022

Wildfires are increasing in both severity and frequency due to climate change. This presentation aims to review and summarize the many hazards and risks posed to wildland firefighters, such as inhalation of airborne contaminants resulting from burning and combustion. In addition to industrial hygiene exposure concerns, there are many other hazards of being a wildfire firefighter including safety risks and mental health considerations. Wildfire firefighters receive extensive training on factors that influence fire behaviour (i.e., fuel, wind, temperature, slope and elevation) and the importance of situational awareness (i.e., escape routes and danger tree assessment). Fatigue and mental health of firefighters are of great significance; in emergency situations, firefighters may be required to work shifts of 24 hours or more, work night shifts, and may potentially witness great loss and tragedy.

Learning Outcomes
At the end of this lecture, attendees will:
  • • Describe the climate change factors that affect the frequency and severity of wildfires.
  • • Discuss the primary exposure hazards for wildland firefighters.
  • • Summarize the current knowledge/literature regarding exposures associated with wildland firefighters.
  • • Recognize the variety of safety risks and mental health challenges faced by wildfire firefighters.
