Celebrating Global AIHA Microgrant Recipients (AIHce EXP 2022 OnDemand)
Course Description:
Recorded at AIHce EXP 2022

In response to the interconnectedness of supply chains and the global economy, AIHA has established its Emerging Economy Microgrant Program administered by the International Affairs Committee under guidance of the CEO with final approval of the AIHA Board of directors. Grants of not more than $3500 are awarded to stand-alone projects. Nine microgrants were awarded in the spring of 2021 to recipients from several areas of the world (Asia, Africa and South America). The projects ranged from worker education to managing hazards in plantation industries. Two projects funded in 2021 will be highlighted in this session. In Ethiopia, a team worked to assess occupational health and safety practices and associated factors in the textile industry. As an intervention, textile industry workers and employers received training to understand the occupational health and safety practices that prevent injuries and illnesses. In Brasilia, a team assessed the health and safety of waste workers. Initially people worked to salvage items by picking over the open garbage dumps. Once work areas were enclosed, however, worker exposure to toxic dust and metals increased. Workplace Health Without Borders facilitated this application for an AIHA Microgrant.
