Big Data and Exposure Risk Assessment in the USAF

In 1997, President Clinton ordered the creation of a Force Health Protection Program. This program mandated life-long exposure records for all DoD personnel (military and civilian) throughout their careers. The Defense Occupational and Environmental Health Readiness System (DOEHRS) is the repository for all DoD industrial hygiene data and is the system of record for the DoD Individual Longitudinal Exposure Record (ILER). While data went into DOEHRS, there was no direct means to extract information needed for exposure risk assessment. The objective was to create a specialized report to extract IH occupational exposure data and standardized processes for analysis and communication. The report (Universal Air Report, or UAR), created by USAFSAM, provided the foundation information for the statistical analysis. This presentation will provide an overview of the UAR, the statistical analysis, risk categorization, and tools used to communicate the results of the exposure risk assessment and metrics that were developed. Already, the effort has impacted decision making and metrics developed are under consideration for rollout and stewardship.

Exposure Assessment and Control — Missed Opportunities
Many exposure assessments utilize one or two integrated samples to cover the workday. The resulting number (i.e., TWA) represents the worker's exposure for that day and is the basis for compliance, SEG, PPE selection and control decisions. Hidden within the TWA are the peaks, valleys and other variations that shaped the worker's exposure. Within this hidden part are useful details about the exposure and where efficient and effective exposure control solutions lie.
