Climate change presents challenges and opportunities for the OH&S community. Challenges may include: a) novel threats, b) rapidly evolving work environments, c) exacerbation of existing hazards, d) multiple/simultaneous crises, d) cascading effects, and e) expanding OH&S roles and responsibilities. Opportunities may include: a) new vocations, b) technological innovations, c) investment, d) improved work-life balance and health outcomes, and e) changes in economic policy. Addressing challenges and opportunities requires:1) new ways of thinking; 2) threat surveillance; 3) adaptive capacity to address volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) threats; 4) inter-agency collaboration; 5) enhanced training and education; 6) new competencies in foresight and planning; and 7) capability to respond to multiple and simultaneous crises. The many uncertainties opportunities associated with possibilistic OH&S climate change can be effectively managed to create a better future for the OH&S profession and its stakeholders.

Learning Outcomes
At the end of this lecture, attendees will:
  • • Describe the challenges and opportunities inherent to climate change with respect to OH&S.
  • • Determine how future OH&S practices may be affected by climate change.
