The Crossroads of Science and Regulations in Glyphosate and Cancer (AIHce EXP 2021 OnDemand)
Course Description:
Recorded at AIHce EXP 2021

Glyphosate is one of the most popular broad-spectrum herbicides (Roundup®) in the world. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified glyphosate as probably carcinogenic to humans (Group 2A). The USEPA has classified glyphosate as Group E: "Evidence of Non-Carcinogenicity to Humans". There are no occupational exposure limits for glyphosate by OSHA or ACGIH. Is it possible that this product could be related to increased risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma in exposed workers? This session will summarize: a) available toxicological information about glyphosate; b) the weight of evidence concept, interpreted from scientific and regulatory points of view; c) how IHs should treat chemicals with controversial hazard characterizations; d) internal standards to monitor and control exposure; and d) how to interpret the court decisions. Risk assessment is the only viable tool for IHs to navigate among various S&H criteria for complex and emerging toxicants.

Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the session, the participant will be able to:
  • Describe the toxicological characteristics of glyphosate.
  • Recognize agency differences on glyphosate carcinogenicity.
  • Discuss IH approaches for complex chemical agents.
  • Evaluate risk assessments for glyphosate and similar carcinogens.
