Getting the Right Data in Dust Explosion Testing (AIHce EXP 2021 OnDemand)

Explosible dust clouds are expected at least at some point during any powder handling, transfer, processing, dust collection, and packaging operations. Measures must be taken to identify, prevent, and/or protect people, the business, and the community against the consequences of ignition. NFPA 652 requires that the evaluation of fire, flash fire, and explosion hazards of a combustible dust (DHA) be determined by the means of actual test data representative of combustible particulate solids present in a facility. Each situation should be evaluated, and applicable tests selected; with the right testing strategy. In this presentation, we discuss a cost-effective approach for identifying the minimum, pertinent test data required for an effective Dust Hazard Assessment (DHA).

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the session, the participant will be able to:
  • Describe the requirements of NFPA 652.
  • Perform a Dust Hazards Analysis (DHA).
  • Determine dust fire and explosion risks for handling/processing operations.
  • Select dust samples for testing.
  • Implement controls measures to prevent dust fires and explosions.
