The Challenges of Using Real-Time Detection Systems, Part 2: Case Studies in Real-Time Detection Measurements (AIHce EXP 2021 OnDemand)
Course Description:
Recorded at AIHce EXP 2021

Portable instruments often have peak, STEL and TWA alarms based on time history exposure. Updates to NIOSH and TLV exposure limits have made alarm setting strategies more difficult, and sometimes challenge the measurement capabilities of the instrument to provide accurate results. Interfering gases, as well environmental conditions such as temperature and humidity can affect the performance of the electrochemical sensors used to provide readings, and interpretation of downloaded data can be difficult. Part 2 will present the application of the framework (Part 1): 1) in discussing capabilities and limitations of sensors; choosing strategies for alarm setting; and reviewing actual field NO2 data to identify mistakes; and 2) in particle detection technology to obtain objective evidence supporting Silica Competent Person (CP) responsibilities. A relatively inexpensive portable PM2.5/PM10 dust monitor with an adequate correction factor can provide indicative monitoring data. Employing the alarm function, the CP can: a) survey boundaries of restricted areas or set up new ones; b) audit established dust control devices; and c) assist with implementing a new or custom control.

Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the session, the participant will be able to:
  • Explain the capabilities and limitations of real-time NO2 sensors.
  • Describe the effects of interfering gases and humidity on readings.
  • Determine the appropriate take action and exposure limit alarms.
  • Interpret downloaded monitoring results. • Avoid common NO2 monitoring mistakes.
  • Demonstrate familiarity with a PM2.5/PM10 dust monitor.
  • Define the concept of a correction factor .
  • Use a real time dust monitor for indicative monitoring applications.
  • Leverage concentration data and peak alarms to improve systems and influence behaviors.
