The Challenges of Using Real-Time Detection Systems, Part 1 Data Gathering to Actionable Information (AIHce EXP 2021 OnDemand)
Course Description:
Recorded at AIHce EXP 2021

This session will discuss challenges and real life examples associated with Real-Time Detection Systems (RTDS) used in exposure assessment strategies. Part 1 will provide: 1) an overview of RTDS as used as part of an overall exposure assessment strategy and to document regulatory compliance; and 2) a peer reviewed alarm setting process framework for arriving at appropriate sensor selection, datalogging parameters and alarm configurations. Managing OH consequences has been problematic when it comes to actionable information gleaned from sensor data. The judgement of regulatory entities, can be at odds with IH practitioners implementing an exposure strategy that creates exposure profiles and judges workplace exposures. The alarm setting work improves upon a 2013 HSE publication offering improvements to British/European Standards. Technology users can use this document as a technical basis for alarm setting of real-time instruments.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the session, the participant will be able to:
  • Demonstrate how RTDS fits into an exposure assessment strategy.
  • Choose the correct objectives for sensor/instrument selection.
  • Establish data logging parameters, and alarm set points.
  • Cite the framework determinants for instrument selections.
  • Communicate the value of an alarm setting process.
  • Conduct discussions with regulators, managers, legal staff, C-suite, and customers.
