Exposures, Toxicity, and Hazard Communication of Nanomaterials in Construction (AIHce EXP 2021 OnDemand)
Course Description:
Recorded at AIHce EXP 2021

This session will review the following nanoparticle research studies: 1) CPWR studies in an environmentally-controlled chamber where a tradesperson performs routine construction tasks; 2) NIOSH exposure and toxicity assessments of nanoparticle aerosol exposures during construction operations; and 3) training needs related to engineered nanomaterials among California construction trades. CPWR has identified over 650 commercially available nano-enabled construction products. Common construction activities involving nanomaterials are: spraying, sanding, and cutting operations with paints, plastic composites, and concrete that incorporate carbon, clay, and metal-based nanomaterials. Most U.S. construction firms have fewer than 10 employees, which poses unique challenges for protecting workers and informing them of nanomaterials in products they use.

Upon completion of the session, the participant will be able to:
  • Describe the aspects that make control of nanomaterials difficult.
  • List three applications of nanomaterials in construction.
  • Use integrated sampling and IH methods for nanoparticles.
  • Define toxicological studies with dusts/aerosols generated during construction.
  • Summarize NIOSH's toxicological findings of dusts from construction activities.
  • Outline the awareness of nanomaterials among California union tradespeople.
  • Discuss deficiencies found in nanomaterials safety data sheets.
