The Impact of Workplace Musculoskeletal Disorders on the Opioid Crisis (AIHce EXP 2021 OnDemand)
Course Description:
Recorded at AIHce EXP 2021

As the Covid-19 pandemic spreads across the globe, let's not forget the opioid overdose deaths that continue to devastate communities and lives. More than 47,000 people die annually in the U.S., due to opioid overdose deaths. Workplace musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) have recently been identified as a key factor in opioid-related overdose deaths. Recent research found that 57% of those who died had at least one prior workplace MSD. There is a clear correlation between poor workplace ergonomics, jobs with the highest injury and illness rates, and opioid-related overdose deaths. During this session, participants will learn that it's critical to implement workplace interventions to reduce the hazards that lead to injuries for which opioids are prescribed. This includes deploying a comprehensive and systematic process for identifying, analyzing, and controlling workplace risk factors that lead to workplace MSDs.

Upon completion of the session, the participant will be able to:
  • Communicate to stakeholders that MSDs are a factor in opioid-related overdose deaths.
  • Explain how demanding work conditions and forceful exertions lead to MSDs.
  • Demonstrate how an ergonomics process can reduce MSDs.
