Increasing the Usefulness of OSHA Sampling and Analysis Methods for Field Hygienists (AIHce EXP 2021 OnDemand)
Course Description:
Recorded at AIHce EXP 2021

OSHA Method 7 recognized that multiple analytes may be sampled on the same media, but was ambiguous regarding extraction solvent use and did not provide robust validation data. The OSHA Salt Lake Technical Center has withdrawn Method 7 from use and has consolidated pre-existing OSHA and NIOSH methods for concurrent sampling of multiple analytes on a single sampling tube or filter. Previously, different extraction solvents or digestion approaches were called for in the various individual analyte methods. For some analytes not specifically designated for concurrent analysis, a supporting laboratory would need to decide to either select a subset of analytes or analyze the entire group of requested analytes together. Work has been completed for two sampling groups with standardized analytical parameters. Details on standardized sampling and analysis for alcohols, diisocyanates, carbon disulfide extractable organics, and several groups of metal analytes will be presented. Each sampling group provide unambiguous information regarding compatible analytes to assist field hygienists in clearly identifying sampling needs to obtain robust, defensible results.

Upon completion of the session, the participant will be able to:
  • Recognize the need to validate changes to sampling and analysis methods.
  • Use a well-defined analytical method for aggregate analytes.
