The Permitting Process of Drinking Water Supplemental Disinfection Systems for Waterborne Pathogen Control and Prevention (AIHce EXP 2021 OnDemand)
Course Description:
Recorded at AIHce EXP 2021

Various industry associations, organizations and government agencies have published standards/guidelines to assist facilities in developing water safety plans. Although there are several disinfection options and technologies that can be implemented in the building water system, there is no uniformity on the requirements that a disinfection technology has to fulfill. The federal regulation that dictates the requirements applies to nontransient noncommunity systems such as hospitals, nursing homes and hotels. The states are responsible for the enforcement of the rule but requirements vary widely in each state. This education session is aimed at: 1) providing practical examples of permit applications; 2) demonstrating how the IH on the water management team can play a key role in the success of the waterborne pathogen control program; and 3) describing how the IH can help building owners/managers to make informed decisions on the treatment type to implement, and fulfill the requirements of the disinfection program permit.

Upon completion of the session, the participant will be able to:
  • Describe a practical approach to a disinfection permitting process.
  • Review the basic requirements of a permit application.
  • Discuss how an IH can be a crucial person in the permitting process.
