Providing emergency response to cultural heritage (CH) sites poses risks to those involved with post-disaster handling, stabilization & conservation recovery of impacted collections & damaged properties. The session speakers will discuss the following: 1) an AIHA IPRWG/Museum & Cultural Heritage Industry WG joint project to enhance CH emergency training; 2) key EHS issues that arise after emergency/disasters involving museums & historical sites; 3) experiences from post-disaster outreach trips; 4) a FEMA mission assignment to assist post-hurricane damage assessments for US Virgin Islands' collections; 5) how the Smithsonian Institution PRICE collection management team serves in the Emergency Operations Center; 6) resources available through the Foundation for Advancement in Conservation (FAIC) to support CH institutions; and 7) assistance provided by FAIC-supported National Heritage Responders & Alliance for Response.
Upon completion of the session, the participant will be able to:
Describe EHS hazards in museum and cultural heritage collections and environments.
Review partnerships between FEMA and museum and cultural heritage organizations.
Apply the Incident Command System (ICS) to cultural response scenarios.
Leverage AIHA volunteer opportunities to assist museums and cultural heritage organizations.
