Cultural Heritage Emergency Response Training (AIHce EXP 2021 OnDemand)

Providing emergency response to cultural heritage (CH) sites poses risks to those involved with post-disaster handling, stabilization & conservation recovery of impacted collections & damaged properties. The session speakers will discuss the following: 1) an AIHA IPRWG/Museum & Cultural Heritage Industry WG joint project to enhance CH emergency training; 2) key EHS issues that arise after emergency/disasters involving museums & historical sites; 3) experiences from post-disaster outreach trips; 4) a FEMA mission assignment to assist post-hurricane damage assessments for US Virgin Islands' collections; 5) how the Smithsonian Institution PRICE collection management team serves in the Emergency Operations Center; 6) resources available through the Foundation for Advancement in Conservation (FAIC) to support CH institutions; and 7) assistance provided by FAIC-supported National Heritage Responders & Alliance for Response.

Upon completion of the session, the participant will be able to:
  • Describe EHS hazards in museum and cultural heritage collections and environments.
  • Review partnerships between FEMA and museum and cultural heritage organizations.
  • Apply the Incident Command System (ICS) to cultural response scenarios.
  • Leverage AIHA volunteer opportunities to assist museums and cultural heritage organizations.
