Involving IHs in Consensus Standards in Pandemic Response (AIHce EXP 2021 OnDemand)

Course Description:
Recorded at AIHce EXP 2021

The COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated significant vulnerability of the traditional environmental and occupational health regulations. The inertia of government standards, their dependence on the political agenda, and long-term inability to harmonize the regulations between countries make the regulations less adaptable to rapidly changing reality. Consensus standards were immediately demanded when the pandemic affected communities and businesses worldwide. This session, prepared by the AGF Standards Advisory Panel, will discuss: 1) consensus standard development; 2) the current state of standards dedicated to pandemic response; 3) AIHA pandemic response initiatives; 4) consensus standards applicable to IH practice; and 5) benefits of joining task forces for consensus standard development. Face covering standards, such as ASTM WK73471, AATCC M14-2020 and CEN CWA 17553:2020, along with ISO/WD PAS 45005 Safe Working During a Pandemic - Guidelines, will be characterized and discussed.

Upon completion of the session, the participant will be able to:
  • List various consensus standards dedicated to pandemic response.
  • Discuss the applicability of the consensus standards to IH practice.
  • Compare various requirements of the face covering standards.
  • Describe the ISO 45005 pandemic response guidelines.
