Wisconsin's Use of UVGI for Decontamination of PPE During the COVID-19 Pandemic (AIHce EXP 2021 OnDemand)
Course Description: Recorded at AIHce EXP 2021 During the recent pandemic, the supply of N95 respirators was at a critical level with organizations unable to obtain a sufficient quantity. Wisconsin developed a process for supporting those organizations by preserving and reusing respirators. Different methods of preserving and decontaminating respirators were used, including time inactivation, ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI), and vapor phase hydrogen peroxide. The Wisconsin State Emergency Operations Center supported the implementation of three conex units and a number of smaller decontamination units to provide capacity around the state. This presentation will describe UVGI, the health effects of UV-C, and the various implementations of UVGI during the pandemic. The process and lessons learned will hopefully assist in the implementation of strategies for optimizing the supply of PPE during future pandemics.
