Comparisons of Exoskeleton Electromyography (EMG) Data to ACGIH Threshold Limit Values (TLVs) (AIHce EXP 2021 OnDemand)
Course Description:
Recorded at AIHce EXP 2021

Exoskeleton research is as diverse as the different types of exoskeletons entering the market. Without having performance based testing standards, users of exoskeletons can not know what level of protection they are purchasing. This educational session will present: 1) a comprehensive overview of on the job, and lab based testing, with and without an exoskeleton in various companies; 2) a test methodology which utilizes the ACGIH proposed 2016 Upper Limb Localized Fatigue TLV; 3) how to analyze on-site electromyography (EMG) data as compared to threshold limit values (TLVs); and 4) an overview of research findings involving exoskeletons. This is an interactive hands on experience with a chance to ask a lot of questions about how electromyography (EMG), %MVIC, ergonomic risk assessments, and motion capture technology is aiding with this quest.

Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of the session, the participant will be able to:
  • Distinguish between the types of exoskeletons and their uses.
  • Recognize the need for exoskeleton performance based testing.
  • Compare EMG data to TLVs to predict upper body muscle fatigue.
  • Discuss how experimental protocols can predict fatigue risk.
  • Determine the benefits/drawbacks of exoskeleton usage.
  • Use motion capture technology to assess fatigue.
