Ethics in Risk Management, Part 2 (AIHce EXP 2021 OnDemand)
Course Description:
Recorded at AIHce EXP 2021

A core value for OHS professionals is ethical behavior. Achieving this requires assessing and managing risk through a multi-faceted lens. Risk is a ubiquitous part of life and work. Ethical anchors are at the heart of any consideration about what to do about risk. Whether our risk decision-making is framed in qualitative terms (acceptable versus unacceptable) or quantitative terms (PEL, REL), we are always engaged in judging ethics and morals in making risk decisions. Decision-making and ethics in managing risk is rife with complexity, tension, and paradox which arise from this arena's values-dependent, and subjective nature. A central question is, to whom or what is something a risk? Depending upon the context and the who or what, a risk may be acceptable or not. However, the ethical and moral considerations are real and ever present.

Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of the session, the participant will be able to:
  • Interpret risk awareness beyond traditional roots.
  • Leverage ethical perspectives in risk profiles.
  • Assess health more broadly than the absence of injury or illness.
  • Outline the intersections between organization, community, workplace, person, and environmental health.
  • Manage risk decision-making with ethical and moral imperatives.
