How to Collect Viable Clostridioides difficile Endospore Aerosol Using Impingers (AIHce EXP 2021 OnDemand)
Course Description:
Recorded at AIHce EXP 2021

This education session will cover: 1) the history of bioaerosol sampling for Clostridioides difficile (C. diff) endospores; 2) similarities and differences in sampling methodology; 3) impinger collection of bioaerosols; 4) collection efficiencies of both typical and novel liquid impingement media on Clostridium sporogenes; 5) how the use of surrogates may have confounded historical attempts to collect C. diff; and 6) how aerosol collected using typical and novel liquid impingement media resulted in improved collection efficiency and reduced cultivability losses during sample collection in an aerosol test chamber.

Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of the session, the participant will be able to:
  • Discuss previous bioaerosol sampling methods for C. diff.
  • Describe how an impinger collects bioaerosol samples.
  • Define cultivability loss and relative collection efficiency.
  • Detail the differences between typical collection media and impinger collection.
  • Summarize the cultivability losses in impinger air sampling.
