An Evaluation of Common Chemical Contaminants in the Air (AIHce EXP 2020 OnDemand)

There are two purposes for understanding the chemical composition of indoor air: 1) to determine what harmful effect, if any, the air is having on the occupants and 2) to trace those chemical contaminants to their sources. Sometimes the harmful effect is clear with noticeable symptoms or unpleasant odors, but often the result is subtle such as difficulty concentrating, lethargy or long-term consequences. Source control is by far the most effective means of improving indoor air quality. If the source cannot be located technologies must be employed to reduce contaminant levels, which can be expensive and sometimes ineffective. Air is a moving fluid (always changing). It is critical to understand the variables that affect the chemical composition and concentration as well as what is typical and what could be an outlier worthy of additional investigation. This session includes: a) the basics of indoor air quality including the variables that affect it, b) differences in commercial and residential environments, c) the important contributors to poor indoor air quality, d) trends in time or region, e) health and odor concerns, and f) techniques to evaluate indoor air.

Learning Outcomes
Upon completion, the participant will be able to:
• Identify the most important contributors to poor indoor air quality.
• Classify regional and seasonal factors that can affect indoor air quality.
• Develop a strategy to address the chemical contaminants in the indoor environment.
