Sensors that produce digitized data, connectivity, and data handling provide opportunities to dramatically improve the quality of industrial hygiene exposure assessments. However, work is needed to integrate sensors into useful systems that will provide data to protect against fast-acting stressors and improve exposure assessments that rely on time-weighted average (TWA) exposure data. Intra-sampling period exposure variability is the missing dimension in TWA sampling. This is only obtainable using sensors that detect rapid concentration fluctuations. The session will cover: a) present uses of real-time detection systems and b) the attributes of future sensor-based systems that will provide data for fast-acting stressors and intra-sampling period concentration variability information. With such a system, digitized sensor output, connectivity, and data logging will allow proper, ethical collection and interpretation of data to protect the worker and the employer, while providing information regarding exposure variability within a work shift. This type of information is needed to confirm or refute the adequacy of controls and is important for effective hazard abatement efforts.

Learning Outcomes
Upon completion, the participant will be able to:
• Discuss current detection system capabilities and limitations.
• Recognize how detector selectivity affects the uncertainty of real-time detection system data.
• Describe the capabilities inherent in integrated sensor systems that produce large quantities of data.
• Develop a framework for interpretation of real-time detection system data to identify and control hazards.
