Application of Mounting Personal PID VOC Sensors to Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems to Aid First Responders
Small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS) are demonstrating extreme usefulness in emergency and disaster response, mapping, and inspections and are being promoted as useful in responding to hazmat incidents. Using sUAS-mounted sensors to allow for a rapid response to areas in which it may be difficult to reach, or may not be safe for humans to enter, can increase the situational awareness of first responders through the remote detection, identification, and quantification of airborne hazardous materials. This research evaluated the viability and application of integrating personal volatile organic compound (VOC) monitoring devices, using photoionization detector (PID) sensor technology, with a variety of sUAS platforms to detect potentially hazardous airborne contaminants, as well as to estimate potential exposure levels that first responders might experience. Development of a Personnel Dry Decontamination System for Emergency Response
This presentation describes the development of a prototype dry decontamination system (DryCon) for use in workplace personnel decontamination or emergency response involving an aerosol contaminant. The system is compact, portable, and can be operated anywhere on generator power. It can remove dusty contamination from clothing before personnel disrobe in the workplace, at a hospital, or at the scene of a mass casualty event, helping to avoid inhalation of hazardous contaminants. Exposure Controls and Emergency Preparedness for Ammonia Refrigeration Systems
Ammonia is a very hazardous gas used in industrial refrigeration systems as well as other cooling systems. Understanding the risks during normal operations and in the event of a leak, and having appropriate exposure controls and emergency procedures in place, are critical to the safe use of these systems. Failure of ammonia cooling systems can lead to serious health effects including death. This presentation will discuss the work conducted to assist a food production company identify and address gaps in their ammonia exposure and emergency response plans.
