There is no substitute for field experience for the future industrial hygienist and occupational safety professional. Internships benefit employers by providing economical staffing to help boost workplace productivity. Interns can tackle the 'back of the shelf' project that needs to be accomplished but keeps getting pushed due to daily emergent issues. Interns energize existing staff and infuse an exuberance for OSH. This synergistic effect can propel an organization's safety management system forward. However, not all internship experiences are created equal and the differences are greater than the paid vs voluntary work experience. The presentation is designed to explore the concept of the ideal internship from the perspective of the mentor and that of the intern. Mentor: What are the key ingredients that an organization must consider when establishing an internship program? Is a formal job description required? Are performance standards necessary? How is supervising an intern different than supervising any other employee? Intern: What are the key factors when applying for internship and co-op opportunities? How important is salary when deciding between opportunities? What makes an internship memorable?
Presenters: Darlene Powell, Department of Veterans Affairs; Zachariah Brandes-Powell, University of South Florida.
