According to Lois Zachary, 'The Mentors Guide' author, 'Mentors manage the relationship and support the learning by creating a learning environment and building and maintaining the relationship'. Providing adequate support, appropriate challenge, and ample vision are core conditions that work together to facilitate mentee growth and development. Furthermore, self-awareness is a crucial trait of successful leaders. In a study undertaken by Green Peak Partners and Cornell University, it was found that a 'high self-awareness score was the strongest predictor of overall success.' This interactive session by two professional leaders will focus on communicating effectively between mentors and mentees using various communication techniques. 1) Relationship dos and don'ts through various examples with suggested solutions will be analyzed. 2) Methods of understanding self-awareness archetypes and their application to mentoring in addition to techniques that boost emotional intelligence will be discussed. These concepts will be incorporated into a 12-month plan hosted in Catalyst to improve self-awareness and emotional intelligence, while building strong mentoring relationships. Participants will be encouraged to share mentor mentee anecdotes/challenges following each presentation. The session ends with a discussion of experiences shared and tips offered for improving communication.
