Performance of Field Portable Instruments for Assessing Particle Exposure and Respirator Performance
This study aims to develop a method for the field use of portable aerosol monitors; the monitors are a handheld condensation particle counter (CPC) and a portable aerosol mobility spectrometer (PAMS). The method will be for the investigation of workers' personal exposure or the performance of respiratory protection devices. This session addresses the following questions: 1) how to mount the instruments on the worker, 2) how well the instruments withstand the workplace environment and various types of body movement, and 3) are the portable instruments comparable to a reference scanning mobility particle size spectrometer (SMPS). This study demonstrated that the CPC and PAMS are capable of measuring particle exposure under simulated workplace conditions. With appropriate caution, the results from this study could be used for selecting a suitable portable instrument for personal particle exposure assessment and/or the evaluation of a respiratory protection in actual workplaces.

The Importance of Aerosol in Ambient Aerosol Respirator Fit Testing
Ensuring workers are wearing properly fitting masks is paramount to providing safety. By performing a quantitative fit test, we look at the overall fit factor to determine if the mask meets the pass/fail level for the respirator per OSHA 29CFR 1910.134. Quantitative fit testers are a common tool used to conduct the fit tests, and fit test administrators often accept that they simply work. They don't necessarily think about or understand the technology behind the instruments. With the Ambient Aerosol fit test method, the aerosol science can be taken for granted. With potential new technologies, it is important to revisit aerosol fundamentals, and understand that applying the proper technology plays a key role in a quality measurement, proper fitting of masks, and ultimately, safety. Proper application of aerosol science, or particle counting statistics, is needed to ensure workers are wearing good fitting respirators. Particle counting statistics associated with aerosol science determine empirically how well a given particle counting device can accurately determine the overall fit factor for a respirator fit test along with a measure of confidence interval. This presentation examines, compares and contrasts particle counting statistics of different technologies used in the Ambient Aerosol Fit Testing Method.

An Assessment of Powered Air-Purifying Respirators Using a Robotic Manikin Headform
This preliminary study used a robotic advanced headform capable of head and mouth movement to assess the performance of loose-fitting powered air-purifying respirators (PAPRs) at different PAPR flowrates.
