Worker health risk is one of many risks that may affect an organization and that as industrial hygienists we work to eliminate or minimize. One important aspect of effectively managing these risks is understanding how they fit in with other risks the organization needs to manage, and to help the organization as a whole make the best possible management decisions (i.e., enterprise risk management). Enterprise risk management is a process that facilitates good decision making and development of strategies to create value for the organization and minimize the effect of uncertainties on the organization's value. Ultimately this management framework serves to provide greater assurance that the organization's objectives will be achieved. This session will present an introduction to enterprise risk management and its intersection with risk characterization paradigms traditionally used by industrial hygienists. Based on the work of AIHA's Enterprise Risk Management Body of Knowledge team, the session will include lecture materials, case studies of application of techniques, and hands-on interactive analysis of worker exposure events. The principles of enterprise risk management and how the application of those principles can support the business case for protection of worker health will be presented.
