This presentation will provide an update on the status of child labor in the U.S. and around the world. The vulnerability of children due to their social status, mental, physical, and physiological differences from adults, puts them at greater risk of injury, illness, and fatality in the workplace. Despite the knowledge that children are much more likely to be injured or killed on the job the practice continues for a variety of reasons, even in the most developed nations. This educational session is intended to inform attendees of the common causes and rationale for allowing children to work in hazardous environments. Methods to reduce the use of children in hazardous jobs and industries globally will be proposed. When it is not possible to eliminate children from hazardous working conditions, new methods of training children to safely work with dangerous equipment and toxic chemicals will be presented.
Presenters: Thomas Fuller, Illinois State University; Lester Claravall, Oklahoma Department of Labor.
