The use of real-time respirable dust monitors have become increasingly popular for the assessment of the exposure of workers across many workplaces (e.g., mining, construction, manufacturing, oil&gas, general industry). The NIOSH Center for Direct Reading and Sensor Technologies new initiative, right sensors used right, aims at providing guidelines on the selection and use of real-time sensors in occupational environments. This education session will focus on three aspects of the initiative: 1) Correct identification and selection of the right sensor is essential to enable hazard-informed exposure assessment and exposure-informed hazard assessment. The correct use of the instrument and the impact on the quality of the data; 2) Best practices in calibrating real-time respirable dust monitors for a specific applications; and 3) An update on a national and international effort to establish a protocol to assess and verify the performance of real-time respirable dust monitors. Once established, the protocol could be used to verify and compare the capabilities of existing and new monitors.
