The International Standard ISO/IEC 17025:2017 -- the standard that AIHA Laboratory Accreditation Programs, LLC uses to assess its testing laboratories -- was revised in November 2017. The technical aspects of the revised standard were not changed but the expanded scope of the standard and changes in its quality management system requirements have prompted laboratories to develop new approaches to demonstrate competence and to be accredited. The more performance-based standard no longer includes requirements for laboratory positions like a quality manager but includes requirements for laboratories to conduct risk-based thinking. These concepts, that are new for most testing labs, have been challenging for accreditation bodies like AIHA LAP which changed its policies in 2018 to be in line with the new standard. Since the revised standard has also been expanded to include sampling accreditation (that is done in connection with accredited testing), it also represents an opportunity for AIHA LAP to develop a sampling accreditation program that it expects to launch in a year. This session will explore what we have learned about the new ISO/IEC 17025:2017 over the past year and include a discussion about the challenges and opportunities that the new standard presents for AIHA LAP, its accredited labs and their customers.
