Industrial hygienists and occupational safety professionals routinely make important decisions based on the results from testing laboratories they trust to analyze their samples. Testing laboratories can participate in a variety of programs to help ensure that they are regularly providing their customers with quality sampling results. Accreditation and proficiency testing programs are two examples of conformity assessment programs for which IH professionals can rely to ensure competency in sample analysis. Even individuals who work in laboratories, like asbestos fiber-counting analysts, can seek recognition of their knowledge and skills through registry programs, which recognize those who demonstrate competency in specific areas of industrial hygiene, environmental health, or safety practice. This session will help participants understand the major differences between conformity assessment programs and related laboratory programs offered by AIHA Proficiency Analytical Testing Programs, LLC (PAT Programs), AIHA Laboratory Accreditation Programs, LLC (AIHA LAP) and AIHA Registry Programs so that customers know what to look for in selecting a qualified testing laboratory and/or laboratory personnel.
