A comprehensive medical surveillance program is required in many workplaces to comply with applicable regulations and prevent employee exposures to respirable crystalline silica (RCS). An occupational medicine physician and a certified industrial hygienist will highlight developing of medical protocols that comply with standards (U.S., Canada and other countries); using a medical provider network to perform surveillance exams; facilitating physician review of exam results; and obtaining medical clearances. Other topics will include: the process used to establish job-specific evaluation and monitoring parameters; setting the surveillance program in motion; overcoming roadblocks to success, including personnel concerns; creating employee outreach and education programs; managing costs; and anticipating potential legal and regulatory hurdles.
