The Value of Risk Communication in Exposure Assessments – Nitrous Oxide in Labor and Delivery Nitrous Oxide has been used for pain management during maternal labor in developed European countries for decades. It is recently gaining popularity within the United States. Occupational Safety and Health Professionals are tasked with evaluating exposures, the effectiveness of controls, and supporting risk communication efforts, including communication of reproductive risks as it relates to accommodations and essential job functions. While well-known control mechanisms exist to manage exposures to current NIOSH and ACGIH exposure limits, studies on reproductive risk are dated and inconclusive, which may generate fear amongst labor and delivery staff of childbearing age. The use of nitrous oxide as pain management is predicted to become a more prevalent practice expanding to other medical specialties such as emergency and oncology practices.
