The CDC reports that in the United States, reported cases of Legionnaires' disease have increased by nearly 450% since 2000 and these numbers may be under reported. Through the use of risk assessments, best management practices, verification and validation testing and continuous improvement practices, we are starting to see building owners move towards proactive management of risks during normal building operations and occupancy. What is often overlooked in the day-to-day building management programs are the risks presented during renovations and new construction. If not properly managed, construction and renovation projects can adversely impact building water systems and lead to amplification of waterborne pathogens. This session will review the current industry standards, discuss the control measures to mitigate growth of bacteria, and components that may be points of risk. Case studies will show how renovation and new construction can, if not managed well, build significant health risks into the building water systems. We will look at building types with special concerns such as hospitals and data centers and discuss various testing methods that can be used to validate the effectiveness control measures.
