Industrial hygiene can be a hard topic to communicate to colleagues and workers in our organization. Often it is hard to effectively communicate what we do even to our partners. We often speak in terms of parts per million, decibels, and about the consequences of hard to visualize chronic exposures. When workers are making decisions in the workplace, people tend to suffer from a present bias. They think of an illness happening not to themselves, but some future stranger and make poorer decisions as a result. Understanding of how and why we take consistent shortcuts and make errors in our decision making, we can begin to incorporate some solutions and fixes into our systems. We can renovate our hazard communication blueprints to lead an effective occupational health management system. Industrial hygienists should, in addition to their formal role and title as hygienists, consider themselves safety architects. IHs should use cognitive science tools to increase their organizational effectiveness, to build and frame the cognitive framework under which workers in their organizations make decisions in order to steer them to safer choices and fewer illnesses.
