Wearable Sensors for Exposure Monitoring with Data Analytics for Total Exposure Health

We present a solution to capture workplace, environmental and lifestyle exposures for an individual, integrate with genomics and other health-related factors, and apply analytics to derive an Integrated Exposure Health Risk Index (IEHRI) for exposure. The initial demonstration study using this technology was to evaluate Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL). The technology consisted of a wearable sensor for personnel exposure monitoring (24x7) to monitor noise level (both ambient and audio-in/earbud) along with GPS location and survey information (including use of hearing protection). This data was integrated with projected genomic proclivity for NIHL and previous medical history information, to produce an individualized IEHRI for noise exposure. A study was conducted at Moody AFB in Valdosta, Georgia and monitored a representative group of 19 airmen for a 10-day period (on- and off-duty), to quantify integrated noise exposure risk of this population in an operational environment. This presentation will discuss the results of this study, insights and lessons learned, and the wearable and data analytics technologies which are broadly applicable across exposure monitoring.

Advances in Injury Risk Data Collection and Analysis: Wearable Bio-Ergo Technology
Traditional ergonomic assessments are based on observation, making it difficult to collect meaningful risk-detection data. Wearable bio-ergonomic sensors allow evaluators to accurately track and measure movement, load and other physiological demands while employees do routine job tasks. An occupational medicine physician will explain how wearable devices provide clinically accurate data, which can be used by employers to introduce individual preventive interventions and develop enterprise-wide risk management solutions focused on essential job functions, body parts, productivity expectations and other factors affecting work practices.

Personal Exposure Assessment Results and Interactive Database Tool from Washington State Department of Labor and Industries
This presentation will discuss research conducted by Washington's Safety & Health Assessment & Research for Prevention (SHARP) in collaboration with the Division of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH). The researchers examined nine years worth of personal exposure samples conducted during the OSHA State Plan's inspections and consultations. In addition to highlighting exposures identified across industry sectors and specific chemicals, the team created an interactive database tool. This tool can be used to alert SHARP, DOSH and other stakeholders to emerging or unrecognized exposures. It can also easily summarize exposures across an industry, and inform industrial hygienists of potential unanticipated exposures.
